She smiled, thoughts consumed with how lucky she was in this moment. She didn’t need approval from her family because she knew that the affection she had for Jolene was beautiful and real. That was all that mattered, in the end. She didn’t need anyone else to tell her it was a good thing. She knew it.

She put her phone away and resigned herself to a long night of homework and two more classes before she could get that promised kiss, even though it was the last one she’d get for almost a week. She had contemplated Jolene’s offer to go with her to New Hampshire for Thanksgiving, but decided it was definitely too soon to meet Jolene’s family. They were still new as a couple and it seemed risky. Plus, she realized, Rose would kill her if she skipped out on Thanksgiving. It was now practically a tradition that they celebrated together. This would probably be her last opportunity to experience the hilarity of getting to witness Rose struggle to cook a turkey big enough to feed all of the café workers that she seemed to adopt over the holidays. The thought of the previous year’s debacle left her excited to see what would transpire this time around. It would be for the best if she were there with the fire extinguisher again, just in case.
